Mischa Barton – arrested for DUI.
Mischa Barton, Facebook Are Symptoms of ‘Me Generation’

We called celebrity life coach Patrick Wanis, PhD, to hear his thoughts on today’s news concerning Mischa Barton, former star of The O.C.

According to an official police report obtained by TMZ, the 21-year-old actress was arrested early this morning in West Hollywood for driving under the influence of alcohol. Police stated, in part, that Ms. Barton was picked up after she was “seen straddling two lanes of traffic and failed to signal when making a turn.” (The full L.A. County Sheriff’s press release can be found here.)

“It’s astounding,” Mr. Wanis said after we broached the topic of the actress’ arrest. “And yet it’s not astounding. The majority of people [who confront substance abuse issues] are obsessed with treating the symptoms and not the causes.” Additionally, he said, people like Ms. Barton turn to drugs and/or alcohol in order to either numb a feeling or to create a feeling.

What then of her decision to drive a car while she was loaded? Surely Ms. Barton—more readily than most—could pay for a taxi or hire a designated driver.

“It comes down to a lack of responsibility, a lack of accountability,” he said, moving on to address the apparent D.U.I. upswing among Hollywood’s young and female coterie of stars. “What you’re seeing are examples of the “Me Generation”—it’s all about taking and never about giving back. So they’re what I refer to as ‘the narcissistic people.’ Narcissism is caused by low self-esteem,” Mr. Wanis said.

“Even though they act as if they’re confident, most of them act out of arrogance and vanity,” he continued, “Deep down they have huge insecurities and self-doubt; they can’t handle criticism or judgment; they tend to be all about themselves.”

Jamie Lynn – Changes American culture forever

Jamie Lynn Changes American culture forever

Jamie Lynn – Changes American culture forever

The announcement that Britney Spear’s younger sister Jamie Lynn is pregnant will only serve to idolize teenage pregnancy according to one celebrity life coach.

“What most people fail to realize is that while many people are criticizing Jamie Lynn and her parents for the 16 year old’s unplanned pregnancy, the media is now going to follow her around everywhere until she gives birth and that action will automatically create the idolization and idealization of teen pregnancy”, according to Patrick Wanis, PhD, Celebrity Life Coach and Human Behavior Expert.

“No matter what Jamie Lynn might say against premarital se-x, the future barrage of photos and videos of her will simply glorify and endorse to the world that it is OK to be a teen, have se-x and get pregnant. This event could potentially change the American pop culture and outlook on teen pregnancy” says Wanis.

“This problem is compounded by the fact that Jamie Lynn is already a teen idol in America because of her TV show, with girls as young as eight watching and idolizing her. The ramifications are far-reaching given that every mother and her daughter will now prematurely be discussing this topic” according to Wanis.

Pop Tarts: Top Ten Celebrity Meltdowns: Who Went Mad and Made a Mess in 2007?

LOS ANGELES — Bald beauties, booze and stars behind bars — every year keeps us busy and 2007 was no exception.

And while Britney Spears won’t be winning any awards for her VMA performance, she does (surprise, surprise) take the gold for the greatest meltdown of the year, topping Pop Tarts’ list of Tinseltown’s most troubled.

“2007 has probably been the worst year of Britney’s life, with so many bizarre behaviors — fights with the paparazzi and her mother, custody battles, binge drinking and car accidents. However, the number one meltdown is the shaving of her head,” said Patrick Wanis, a psychologist and celebrity behavior expert who worked with Pop Tarts to compile the Top Ten.

“Few people realized how serious this incident was and what it signified. Although in some cultures shaving the head can represent cleansing or letting go of the old self, in Britney’s case it was really more about self-mutilation and self-loathing than a spiritual ritual.”

How to say “No”

How to say No

How to say “No”

In this week’s Success Newsletter, I would like to talk about how to say “No!”

First a quick update:

Listen to my interview The Curse of the Reality shows on Danny Wright – Wright All Night syndicated radio show http://patrickwanis.com/RadioInterviews ·         Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Tom Cruise and Lindsay Lohan; read my insights in The New York Observer http://www.observer.com/2007/expert-rules-paparazzi-engagement-how-survive-scientology ·         “Is Your Partner Cheating on You?” – read my article for Date.com and Matchmaker.com at www.date.info ·         Listen to the interview I gave on “Success Principles” (Annie Jenning’s PR) www.patrickwanis.com/successprinciples

Now let’s talk about how to say “No!”

In last week’s Success Newsletter, I explained that we tend to find it so hard to say “No” to others – even when it clearly involves things we do not want to do or something we do not want to be, and so we say, “Yes” in order to get the love, acceptance and approval of others – our family, friends, peers and business colleagues. We want people to like us and we fear that if we say “No”, they might get annoyed with us, criticize us, humiliate us or say something horrible to us, or maybe they won’t want to talk to us anymore; maybe we just want to avoid confrontation and “keep the peace.” Either way, the result is that we rob ourselves of joy, happiness and even success.

Around this time of the year, we will be asked to attend parties, events and dinners; we will be asked to do things, go to places and be with people – all of which may very well be against our wishes. So how do we say “No”?  Continue reading “How to say “No”” »

Rules of Engagement for Paparazzi Scientology

The Expert: Rules of Engagement for Paparazzi, Scientology

Last week, celebrity life coach Patrick Wanis, PhD, wanted to tell our readers his list of the Top Ten Celebrity Meltdowns of 2007.

Today, on the phone with the Daily Transom, he got a little more daring.

First up: recent news that Lindsay Lohan has started to use the paparazzi to her own advantage, setting up and pocketing proceeds from snaps of her own mug.

“I say kudos to her!” he said. “I was thinking last week, Why don’t celebrities just use their brain?

Mr. Wanis said that working with the roaming shutterbugs, as opposed to making them your enemy, simply makes good business sense.

“If you’re smart or mature enough to accept that it’s going to happen, then just use the system to your favor. There’s nothing wrong with that.

“I understand and empathize with both sides. I can understand when celebrities want privacy, but then don’t go shopping down Rodeo Drive,” he said. “How can you expect to have privacy then? That is so absurd. Don’t go into the haunts where all the celebrities hang out, because you’re not going to get privacy there.”

Britney: the new Virgin Mary?

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Britney the new Virgin Mary

Britney: the new Virgin Mary?

A French producer wants Britney Spears to play a teen woman who gives birth to Jesus, in a new satire called Sweet Baby Jesus. The producer says the film will start shooting in March and Britney is reviewing the script, according to the latest issue of Us Weekly:

“Spears, 26, would play a pregnant 19-year-old unsure of her baby’s paternity who goes into labor on Christmas Eve in Bethlehem, Maryland, as rumors swirl that the birth is Jesus Christ’s second coming….”I had to convince my partners, because they were like, ‘Oh, no. Britney?’ But I thought it was brilliant.”

The producer told the magazine that Spears was “reviewing the script.”

In terms of the producer’s goals, his strategic moves are brilliant because he will get so much controversial publicity and probably a lot of flack and attempts by the Catholic Church to boycott the film which, of course, will probably just make the film a big hit –the same way that The Catholic Church’s attack on the DaVinci Code made it an even greater success.

As far as Britney is concerned, her real life persona would definitely match perfectly the character the film’s producer has described that she would be playing – a suffering, lost soul…

Whether Britney would be dependable, reliable and even physically and mentally healthy enough to make the film is truly questionable. It seems that Britney is also trying to emulate and follow in the footsteps of her idol, Madonna, who also entered the acting world and tried to rock the Catholic Church with her controversial behavior and stage performances.

Final Word: Britney would be better to read the script of her own childhood, broken relationships, inability to mother her children and deep pain that she is so desperately trying to escape.

Saying No

Saying “No!”

In this week’s Success Newsletter, I would like to talk about the importance of learning to say “No!”

First a quick update:

·         Listen to the interview I gave on “Overcoming Fear” (Annie Jenning’s PR) www.patrickwanis.com/fear·         Listen to my tips on easing Holiday stress and insights into the male and female traits that create hurt, pain & depression on Sally Jessy Raphael’s syndicated radio show http://patrickwanis.com/RadioInterviews ·         Read my list of the Top Ten Celebrity Meltdowns of 2007 in The New York Observer http://www.observer.com/2007/expert-top-ten-celebrity-meltdowns-2007·         Listen to my 20-minute interview on how to Survive the office party -and get aheadhttp://www.patrickwanis.com/communicationskills ·         Read my article for Date.com and Matchmaker.com “Is it Cheating?” at www.date.info

Now let’s talk about why it is critical to learn to say “No!”

Studies reveal that by age three, the average child has been told 353,000 times “No!”   Of course, there are many examples whereby parents need to tell a child “No” when it relates to safety, guidance and basic morals & values. However, the constant daily repetition of being told “No” has primarily a negative result: The child grows up with numerous crippling fears and the inability to express itself physically, mentally, emotionally, affectionately, artistically, creatively, joyfully, verbally, etc.

The Expert: Top Ten Celebrity Meltdowns of 2007!

Top Ten Celebrity Meltdowns of 2007

The Expert: Top Ten Celebrity Meltdowns of 2007!

What better way to lighten your Monday load than with a little celebrity lifestyle coaching from Patrick Wanis, PhD? He’s just miraculously survived an invasion of legion New Yorkers in town for Art Basel Miami. Despite all that distraction, he offered up a gargantuan platter of super-chewy goss. It’s The Top Ten Celebrity Meltdowns of 2007!

We’ve included his list, which Mr. Wanis released only to The Daily Transom, but we decided to focus first on El Numero Uno: the biggest celebrity train wreck of the year-at least in Mr. Wanis’ view. And you’ll likely never guess who it is. (Hint: It’s not Britney Spears. It’s not Lindsay Lohan. And it sure ain’t Paris Hilton.)

Speaking to the idea of a “celebrity meltdown,” Mr. Wanis acknowledged that a lot of people think celebrities have always been a mess. They claim, he said, that it’s just that today’s technology makes keeping track of their every slip-up too easy. “It’s not just our ability because of technology to know more about their lives. It’s that their lives are in much greater turmoil than ever before,” he told us, adding: “They are losing sight of who they really are. They’re getting carried away by their persona, by their image, and by the grandeurs of delusion and power. It’s a corruption of power.”

After composing his list, Mr. Wanis was able to find a pattern, one common theme linking all the stars on his list. “They all need help,” he mused. “Help beyond just going into a rehab clinic or a detox clinic. Most of them need to actually deal with their inner demons. And not just try to escape them via drugs, alcohol and partying.”

So, back to the number one meltdown of 2007-it’s Boy George! Yup, the Karma Chameleon himself fills Mr. Wanis’ top slot this year for celebrity meltdowns. Why? Namely, because the Culture Clubber (a.k.a. George Alan O’Dowd) has been arrested and charged with falsely imprisoning Auden Karlsen, a 28-year-old Norwegian male model, in his East London home. According to Mr. Karlsen’s testimony, he was lured under false pretenses to Mr. George’s apartment, where the sassy singer then produced whips and sex toys, shouting, “Now you’ll get what you deserve.” Handcuffed to Mr. George’s wall, Mr. Karlsen claims that his escape was only possible because he yanked on his handcuffs hard enough to dislodge a hook holding him down.

Avoiding Holiday arguments fights

Avoiding Holiday arguments & fights

In this week’s Success Newsletter, I would like to talks about how to avoid drama, arguments and self-sabotage during the Holidays.

First a quick update:

·         Listen to my interview about fear on Sally Jessy Raphael’s syndicated radio show Wednesday December 5, 2007·         Read my comments in The New York Observer on The Curse of The Reality Show http://www.observer.com/2007/expert-curse-reality-show-romance ·         Listen to my 45-minute interview on The Top Nine Tips to Help You Enjoy The Holidayshttp://www.patrickwanis.com/holidaytips ·         Listen to my 20-minute interview on how to Survive the office party -and get aheadhttp://www.patrickwanis.com/communicationskills

Now let’s talk about the top 9 tips to enjoy the Holidays.

First, remember that the Holidays will automatically trigger every insecurity that we have as well as our fears, anger, frustration, resentment, bitterness, guilt, shame and any other negative emotion that we hide deep inside.  Read my article with the first four of the top nine tips here: http://patrickwanis.com/blog/easing-holiday-stress-top-9-tips-part-1

5. Overcoming loneliness
Almost every one of us has probably experienced loneliness around the Holidays: maybe we are away from our family or someone special, there has been a loss, a breakup, or we simply don’t have love and a relationship in our lives. Allow yourself to feel the pain and hurt and then release it – not by fighting it but by allowing yourself to fully feel it and imagine it leaving your body. And don’t beat yourself up for feeling bad – all of your feelings are valid. Finally, take some action. After feeling the emotions, set up a date or take some time to volunteer at a soup kitchen or a charity. I promise that you will feel better because you will appreciate that there are people worse off than you, the kind deeds will raise your Serotonin levels (feel-good chemical that your brain releases) and you will feel special, significant and meaningful knowing that you have helped others and you are needed.

Did Reality Show Lead to Demise of Hulk Hogans Marriage

Did Reality Show Lead to Demise of Hulk Hogan’s Marriage?

LOS ANGELES —  After 24 years of marriage, Hulk Hogan‘s wife and star of “Hogan Knows Best” Linda Bollea thinks it’s “best” she start fresh by filing for divorce.

Add Nick and Linda to Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, whose romance was ruined by the reality show “Newlyweds,” Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, who split after starring in “Chaotic” and Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro, who broke up after appearing in “Til Death Do Us Part?” and we wonder … are the reality show cameras cursed?

“Four seasons of TV cameras following Linda around and edging her and the family to create drama has added mental, emotional and physical stress to their marriage,” said celebrity life coach and human behavior expert Patrick Wanis, who coached and hypnotized the star-studded duo during their VH1 series.
