Now, let’s talk about the danger of gurus.

Recently, one of the featured teachers on “The Secret”, New Age Guru, James Arthur Ray, held a “Spiritual Warrior” retreat in which three people died and eighteen others were injured after participating in a sweat lodge. It’s been reported that the participants fasted for 36 hours and then had a breakfast buffet on the day of the sweat lodge. James Ray is now facing possible homicide charges.

This horrific tragedy has created a huge backlash against many of the self-help experts and gurus. Jennifer, wrote on my blog that this tragedy “made me question myself and everything around me… (more…)

Beware of gurus - the interview

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

The following is a transcript of an interview between Jim Peake of MySuccessGateway.com and Celebrity Life Coach and Human Behavior Expert, Patrick Wanis Ph.D. about the Sweat Lodge deaths of three people at James Arthur Ray’s “Spiritual Warrior” event in Sedona, Arizona. James Ray is a New Age guru, self-help expert and one of the teachers featured in the hit movie “The Secret”.

To listen to the audio interview, click here.

Jim: This is Jim Peake at MySuccessGateway.com and today I’ve got a fantastic podcast call with Mr. Patrick Wanis, Celebrity Life Coach and Human Behavior Expert, PhD. And you can find him at patrickwanis.com. And it’s spelled Patrick W-A-N-I-S dot com. Welcome Patrick.

Patrick: Thanks Jim.

Jim:     This is the call about the Sweat Lodge tragedy down in Sedona, AZ and James Ray had an event down there and apparently there were a few things that went wrong, terribly wrong, and it cost some people their lives.

Patrick: Well, there are so many points to this story, Jim. Let’s just give everyone listening to this call a sort of a synopsis of the story. James Arthur Ray is recognized as a self-help guru, a spiritual guru, a new-age guru, a self-help expert. He was one of the featured presenters in the movie The Secret and you’ll recall he’s also been on Oprah twice. She promoted The Secret and she promoted James Ray and a couple of other people. James Ray’s been around for a long time. He also is a published author. He holds some retreats. The retreat that he held was known as “Spiritual Warrior” Camp and it’s done over four or five days and people that attend this pay almost $10,000 to be part of this. If you read the actual publicity that he writes about this it’s like, “I’m going to reveal to you secrets that no one else knows. I’m the only one that has this. I’ve spent years trying to find this. I’ve traveled to Peru. I did this, etc, etc.”  So he builds himself up as having a very special message and he says, “Look, don’t worry about how much you’re investing because you’re going to make so much money so easily and so effortlessly.”  Okay. The spiritual retreat that he engages in, he calls it Spiritual Warrior, included fasting for 36 hours in the desert. Now the reports say that it also included not drinking water. Now, I’m not sure how that’s possible and remember not every detail that we’re discussing today has been verified. But, the people that did this fasted for 36 hours. Then on the morning of the Sweat lodge they go ahead and have a breakfast buffet. I have done sweat lodges Jim. I’ve done two of them. And I never saw anyone get sick and I never saw any injuries and I never saw any tragedies.

Jim:     Yeah, I’ve done two of them as well so I’ve never seen that either.

Patrick:           Now, here’s the point. (more…)

What you really need

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

In this week’s Success Newsletter, I would like reveal our real physical, mental and emotional needs.

First a quick update:

Now, let’s talk about what you really need.

In the 1980s, Australian rock band, INXS, had a big hit with a song “What you need”:

Don’t you get sad and lonely
You need a change from what you do all day
Ain’t no sense in all your crying
Just pick it up and throw it into shape, ooh yeah

That’s why
You need
Ooh that’s why,
This is what you need, I’ll give you what you need

Of course, INXS was referring to love, romantic love, fun and escape. And as I reveal in my book, “Soul Mates”, love is one of our primary needs:

“In his book The Science of Love, Anthony Walsh defines love as “that which satisfies our need to receive and bestow affection and nurturing; to give and be given assurances of value, respect, acceptance and appreciation; and to feel secure in our unity with, and belonging to, a particular, family.”

Teens burn boy - psychopaths & violent behavior

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

The following is a transcript of an interview between Russ Morley, host of 850 WFTL radio and Celebrity Life Coach and Human Behavior Expert, Patrick Wanis Ph.D. about the five Florida teens who allegedly doused a 15-year-old boy with rubbing alcohol and set him on fire as an act of revenge. The teen was set on fire over a $40 video game. Police said, “I’ll be honest, a couple of them were laughing about it last night. [Only] one of them seemed genuinely sorry for what he did,”

Good Morning on the WFTL Morning News. Now here’s your host, Russ Morley.

(Quotes from various speakers)

“The victim’s gonna carry a lifelong scars if he survives. It’s just a horrible, horrible case. “

“Michael Brewer reported somebody for stealing his dad’s bike. That’s what this comes down to. It’s retaliation”.

“Nearly two-thirds of his body is burned in mixed second and third-degree burns”.

“They have good grades, no problems in school.  Wrong place, wrong people”.

“The State Attorney’s office will make a decision whether to keep the case in juvenile court or whether to transfer to the adult system.”

“It’s almost a cliché to say, you know, that this crime has shocked the community but in this case it really is true.”

Russ Morley:

Sherriff Allen Burty, before that Corey Hill public defender, Sharon Jarvis’ mother and 15-year-old Michael Brewer’s mom. Michael Brewer, 15 years of age, is being treated this morning at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Burn Unit in Miami.  Two-thirds of his body burned.  BSO say 5 boys surrounded him Monday afternoon outside a Deerfield Beach Apartment Complex, splashed him with rubbing alcohol, and then set him a fire. The boys have been charged with aggravated assault.  One of them was also charged with attempted second-degree murder.  He is the one that actually torched Michael.  What kind of disconnect would teenagers have to have to be able to do something like this?  Joining us this morning is Celebrity Life Coach and Human Behavior Expert, Dr. Patrick Wanis, out of Miami this morning.  Dr. Wanis, good morning.

Patrick Wanis:

Good morning, Russ.

Russ:   All right.  Yesterday, we were talking and you were mentioning two words, sociopath and psychopath. Which are applicable here?

David Letterman, cheating & power

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

The following is a transcript of an interview between Russ Morley, host of 850 WFTL radio and Celebrity Life Coach and Human Behavior Expert, Patrick Wanis Ph.D. about David Letterman admitting that he had sex with various female workers from his show.

David Letterman:

The creepy stuff was that I have/had sex with women who work for me on the show.  Now, my response to that is, “Yes, I have.”  And would it be embarrassing if it were made public?  Perhaps it would.  Perhaps it would.  Especially for the women.  But that’s a decision for them to make, if they want to come public and talk about their relationships, if I want to go public and talk about the relationships.  But what you don’t want is a guy saying, “Oh, I know you had sex with women,” saying, “I would like $2 million or I’m going to make trouble for you.”  So that’s where we stand right now.

Russ:              I don’t know if it’s a shocking announcement or not.  David Letterman admitting the fact that he had sex with a bunch of, a number of women, in his what looks to be his office at work, the women he worked with on The David Letterman Show, his Worldwide Pants Organization.  He produces his own show out there and this seems to be the year of the cheater, that’s for sure. Are we becoming so morally bankrupt we just don’t care anymore, we’re not surprised anymore? Joining us this morning is Dr. Patrick Wanis, he’s a celebrity life coach and human behavior expert out of Miami.

                        Dr. Wanis, good morning.

Dr. Patrick Wanis:

Good morning, Russ.

Russ:              All right, first take on the David Letterman story, and I guess the whole thing that amazes me the most is the forgiveness we’ve issued to him already.

Dr. Wanis:   Well, there are many reasons. First and foremost, he’s not an elected official so we have a different expectation of David Letterman.

Number two, he’s an entertainer.  So he’s there to entertain, he’s there to make us laugh.

Number three, he’s been in our homes for a long, long time so, you know, we have a different kind of connection, a different kind of bond, a different kind of relationship with him.

You’ll never measure up

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

In this week’s Success Newsletter, I would like discuss the horrible impact of the media’s toxic messages about idealized beauty and physical perfection.

First a quick update:

  • Letterman, power, opportunity & cheating: Read the transcript of the radio interview I gave about David Letterman, and, the judge accused of having sex with male inmates in exchange for leniency. Read more at my blog: www.patrickwanis.com/blog

Now, let’s talk about the media’s obsession with physical perfection and beauty, and, its dangerous impact on you and children.

This week, Time magazine reported that France is considering putting warning labels on retouched photos. Many Western countries already have health warnings on tobacco and alcoholic products as well as some genetically modified food products, but this new push by a politician in France is designed to protect people’s mental and emotional health.

French conservative parliamentarian Valérie Boyer is proposing legislation that would make it illegal to publicly distribute doctored photos without the warning “Photograph retouched to modify the physical appearance of a person.” A violation would result in a fine of $55,000.

Patrick:           Well – and I know that you’re happily married and you have a lot of satisfaction and fulfillment within your relationship which makes you a great role model for a lot of people. But I’m curious about some of the cases, because, right at the beginning, I even used the terms lobotomy and psychosurgery. And I thought to myself, you know, we’ve bandied around the word lobotomy for many years. But was there a time in medicine when they actually removed parts of the brain or here in America did surgery do so in the hope of changing the way you think and feel?

Peter:              Well, it’s – first of all, it still goes on. I’ll give you a brief history and in 1936, a Portuguese surgeon started cutting up – actually he poisoned – he put holes in the brains of mental patients in the state’s mental hospital and poured poison in. (more…)
