Natalia: Something else, both of them, they have been like icons for the —

Patrick: The gay community?

Natalia: Yes, for the gay community. Like both with very different messages, Madonna more like a sexually aggressive message and Lady Gaga a more inclusive and like ‘let’s all hug together and tolerate whatever it is that’s going on around us’ message. But both of them in the end have become these great gay community icons. Who do you think is more relevant to that community and why?

Patrick: I think Madonna is more relevant because Madonna is more sincere, and Lady Gaga is a little bit like the drag queen and Madonna is a little bit more like Cher. Cher was a big icon of the gay community because Cher wears lavish costumes that are very feminine and very sexy. Lady Gaga doesn’t always wear sexy costumes. She just wears over-the-top costumes.

In the drag world, not every drag queen is sexy. Some drag queens deliberately either are fat or they put on these big costumes that are just extreme. So that’s why a lot of people look at Lady Gaga and say is it a man or is a woman because she is not necessarily being sexy; she is not necessarily being feminine. It’s not to say she’s being masculine but she’s not androgynous. She is almost like a drag queen and she just is too extreme. It’s too extreme; it’s too heavy; it’s not authentic.

Madonna, on the other hand, comes from a more authentic place. Her message is more authentic. Her eroticism is more authentic. Her sexuality is more authentic. What I mean by that is it feels like it’s coming from within her and it’s not just the message of “I need to shock the world.”

Let me put it this way. There is a difference between ‘I want to get a message across’ and ‘I just want to shock the world.’ Madonna, I feel, has always had more of a message, not today but she did, and I’ve always felt Lady Gaga has always been more about shocking people, and then when she is in front of a microphone she might talk about bullying and accepting people as they are.
